The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian was written by the author Sherman Alexie. The main character is Junior, a teenager growing up on an American Indian reservation in Washington state. Junior is too smart for the reservation school, Wellpinit, so he seeks a better education off the reservation, at Reardan High School. Junior faces many challenges including trying to fit in at his new school, widespread poverty and alcoholism on the reservation, and trying to make a better future for himself. Will Junior find love, acceptance, and a better future for himself? You have to read find out!
We finished the book, and it was awesome! We like the book because it is funny, and it shows courage. We learned about the problems on the reservation, and we see how Junior works to overcome the challenges facing him. As a class, we are going to complete an Action Research project focused on the problems affecting American Indians living on reservations.
This book has won numerous awards, including the National Book Award Winner for 2007.
Sounds like an exciting book and I am glad you had the chance to read it. I hope you will let me know when you present your Action Research. I look forward to seeing or at least hearing about your projects. It is always a welcome part of my day to read your blog. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThis must be an interesting book and enjoyable to discuss. I am curious about the challenges that Junior faces fitting into his new school. Have any of you ever felt challenges like those?
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy reading your blogs -- keep sharing!
Hello Dr. Miron,
DeleteYou've asked a very good question. Junior is the only person at his new school who is not white and rich, and he is harassed and bullied by the other students. Some of the students and even some of the teachers are racist and treat Junior badly. Some of us have had to attend a different school and make new friends, which isn't easy. If you have determination then eventually you will make friends.
Thank you for commenting on our blog. We hope that you will continue enjoying our blog!

Dear Room 370,
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed reading this book with you all. I am sure you agree that Junior was very brave leaving the reservation, in pursuit of a better education. Some of the topics about poverty, racism, alcoholism, and death were very hard to grasp. You all did a terrific job following and understanding the story. I am proud of you all.
